Threat Overview

A critical security vulnerability in Kubio Page Builder—a WordPress site builder installed on over 100,000 active websites—enables unauthenticated remote attackers to perform local file inclusion (LFI). Tracked as CVE-2025-2294 with a near-maximum CVSS rating of 9.8, the vulnerability stems from absent file validation in the plugin’s theme template preview handlers. Remote actors can leverage directory traversal sequences to include sensitive server files, extract database credentials, and escalate to complete remote code execution.

Threat Metric Technical Details
Severity Rating CRITICAL (CVSS 9.8 / 10.0)
Vulnerability Class Local File Inclusion / Path Traversal (CWE-22 / CWE-98)
Vulnerable Component Kubio Plugin (versions up to and including 2.2.3)
Attack Vector Unauthenticated Remote HTTP Requests

The Breakdown: How the Exploit Works

The vulnerability exists within the kubio_hybrid_theme_load_template function, which handles template switching and block previews for hybrid block themes.

When rendering block layout previews, the function accepts the __kubio-site-edit-iframe-classic-template request parameter to load specific PHP template files. Because the code fails to validate or restrict this parameter against an approved file allowlist, attackers can inject relative directory traversal sequences (../../) directly into unauthenticated requests.

By pointing the parameter to readable files across the server, the application blindly passes the target path into PHP inclusion routines. Threat actors can read configuration files containing database passwords (wp-config.php), inspect server environment files, or combine file inclusion with Apache and Nginx access log poisoning to trigger immediate PHP script execution on the host.

The Operational Risk: What an Attacker Gains

Because no authentication or user interaction is required to trigger the exploit, automated scanning bots can compromise vulnerable installations instantaneously:

  • Credential Exfiltration: Direct exposure of database credentials, authentication salts, and API tokens stored in root configuration files.
  • Full Remote Server Takeover: Attackers leverage log poisoning or session file manipulation to execute arbitrary system commands, establish webshell persistence, and pivot into adjacent databases.

Our Take in Plain English

“Site builders keep adding complex live preview and dynamic rendering engines directly onto production servers. Every time a plugin allows front-end visitors to request internal files by name, the risk of a path traversal flaw skyrockets. On a modern pre-rendered edge architecture, pages are compiled ahead of time into immutable assets, completely eliminating dynamic server-side file inclusion.”

The Modern Architectural Remedy

  • Legacy Dynamic WordPress: Relies on dynamic PHP runtime file inclusion and real-time template switching on the live production server, exposing file paths to path traversal attacks.
  • Modern Pre-Rendered Architecture: Pre-compiles all layout structures into static HTML and compiled JavaScript on global edge CDNs, leaving zero server-side file inclusion mechanisms exposed to the public internet.

Immediate Action Items for WordPress Operators

  1. Update Kubio Immediately: Upgrade all installations to Kubio version 2.2.4 or higher to enforce strict template path validation.
  2. Review Web Server Logs: Search access logs for suspicious requests containing __kubio-site-edit-iframe-classic-template or directory traversal sequences.
  3. Audit Core Configuration: If traversal attempts are identified, rotate database passwords and WordPress authentication security salts immediately.
